Aretha! One thing we always do with musicals at JTC is search out pop covers of the score–and we were gobsmacked to find out just how many singers, vocal groups and instrumental groups covered “My Cup Runneth Over” from I Do! I Do! which opens our Summer Theatre Festival 2025.
Ed Ames Backed my a massive “Angel Chorus” and string section, with plenty of reverb, Ames had the big pop hit with the version that most people seem to recall.
Perry Como
Ray Conniff
Floyd Cramer
Bing (& Kathryn) Crosby
James Darren
John Davidson (who appeared in JTC’s On Golden Pond)
Milton DeLugg and the Tonight Show Orchestra
Billy Eckstine
Connie Francis (who puts it in a medley with “Together Forever”, another song in the show)
Aretha Franklin
Robert Goulet
The Lennon Sisters
Mantovani
Jim Nabors
101 Strings
Jerry Vale
Margaret Whiting
Ronny Aldrich & His Two Pianos
Anita Bryant
Other artists covered the title song (Kate Smith among them), as well as “What is a Woman?” which was covered by John Davidson, Vic Damone, Lorraine Ellison, Peggy Lee, Eydie Gorme, Robert Goulet and many more.
Curious? You can hear nearly all of these covers on YouTube, Spotify, or wherever you get your music. It’s a nifty throwback to the day when a hit Broadway show would throw off a bunch of hit singles that pop singers would cover.
